Joseph Pulitzer (1847 - 1911) was a newspaper publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the New York World in the United State of America. He had fought against corruption and big business and made sure that the statue of unity remains in New York. His newspaper had very tight competition at that time from William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal. As a result, they had started making news from what they heard[or rather what people wanted to hear] and what they had seen, instead of doing research and finding out the facts. They had started printing and making news more sensationalize by adding sex, crime, and animated cartoons. They had started to focus on more and more readers instead of giving quality news with research. They had introduced the concept of advertising in the newspaper and earning money through it rather than getting money from the reader and asking donations from a political party.

This type of journalism known as "Yellow Journalism". Today yellow journalism word used for corrupt, unethical, unprofessional, and fraud journalists. So, Joseph Pulitzer who introduced new term yellow journalism in journalism and start a new trend of fack news[News which are not real, but fabricated, and shown as they wanted to show], today on his name journalist get one of the prestigious awards for journalism, and other categories.
Then, Why on yellow journalist's name, award name was given?
The obvious answer is money. Joseph Pulitzer has given $ 2,50,000(~1.9 crores in INR of that time) to Columbia University to launch a journalism school and establish the Prize. And that's how award got the name. Pulitzer, who had actually responsible for yellow journalism and starting an unethical and unprofessional trend in newspaper industries, today knows for one of the prestigious awards, which is given in the same field.[May be, he was enlighted in his last time. Politzer was whoever in his life, but this award is not defined by his work or ethics. This award is recognized internationally as one of the great achievement in journalism because it is not easy to get and competition is tough and participant have to compete with other journalists from across the globe to get this
Why controversy created in India for receiving this award by Indian journalists?
Gobind Bihari Lal was the first Indian to get this award in 1937, Jhumpa Lahiri won this award in 2000 (she is not Indian by a citizen, her parents are Indian citizen who migrated to London and later America), Geeta Anand won in 2003 for her work on Pompe disease. Siddhartha Mukherjee [born in India, currently American citizen] is a cancer physician and researcher. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 2011. Vijay Seshadri [born in India, currently American citizen], won a Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for his collection of poems.
Till 2019, five Indian or Indian origin persons awarded Pulitzer prize and they made India proud. And all winners always got congratulated, by all Indians and Indian government and never any controversy was created. In 2020 this year in April five Indias get this award, Mukhtar Khan, Dar Yasin and Channi Anand (They are from J&K Union Territory Of India)won the award in the Feature category, Anushree Fadnavis (Mumbai) and Adnan Abidi (Delhi) won in Breaking News photography category.
When three journalists who are from J & K, were announced the winner of the Pulitzer award, they had not congratulated by India, the Indian government, or Indian people (except India's oldest and current opposition party leader Mr. Rahul Gandhi), and instead controversy had created, on their award winner photographs. The reason is the photograph for which they got awards and the statement released by Columbia university when declaring the award to them.
Dana Candy, administrator of Pulitzer prize and she said, this award is given to them for striking Images of in the contested territory of Kasmir as India has revoked its independence which executed through a communication blackout. This statement it's self not acceptable by the Indians or Indian government. The Indian government and India army actually protecting people of J & K.
The Indian government did not block communication to revoked their freedom but to save them from fake news and radicalization which always spread by Pakistan through social media, and there had been a possibility that fack news would have been spread after removing article 370 which was temporary arrangement given to state on J & K for the initial time, as that is the only Indian state, where the minority of India, are present in majority.[ Recently we have seen such cases when around 7000, fake accounts created on twitter to defame India, in gulf countries].
So, this award supports such a false narrative that the Indian government is hiding information about J & K and justify by only some photographs. Such Images only yellow journalism as it does not describe the ground reality, but it tells what you want to see. And by giving Pulitzer award to these fake photographs, fack news is being speared, all over the globe.
